It's the Meat

We Need Your Help Today                                          Tell A Friend

Join PCRM in calling for the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the source of the recent salmonella contamination—the meat industry. Sign our petition and urge your friends to sign, too. Help us provide a wake up call to HHS and demand it start protecting us and our food supply.

Full petition text:

To: The Honorable Michael O. Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services

Subject: Salmonella Outbreak

Dear Secretary Leavitt,

As a concerned citizen, I appreciate your department’s investigation of the recent salmonella outbreak. However, it is not enough to merely identify whether the infectious bacteria came from a tomato or jalapeno pepper.  Contaminated produce is only the last link in a chain that begins with the meat industry. To truly protect America’s food supply, the Food and Drug Administration must address the fact that burgeoning meat consumption has caused a massive overproduction of chickens, cows, pigs, and other animals, leading to unprecedented production of feces that end up in rivers, streams, and irrigation water, and contaminate otherwise healthful produce.

I urge you to investigate the real source of the contamination—the meat industry—and take action to protect the health of U.S. citizens.
